Wilson / Marquinez - MW40OF
From the 69F to the MW40 Offshore Foiler!
-
69F
“The whole process that went on designing and developing the Persico 69F allowed us to confirm best practices in the different aspects of the always evolving foiling ground and monohull foiling in particular, allowing us to bring up a great deal of confidence to take steps in new directions.”
Nowadays the 69F class is the only full-foiling monohull Dinghy for crew sailing. With the MW40 Offshore Foiler the next step will be set to a fully crewed Offshore Foiling boat.

MW40OF
An offshore racer with full foiling capabilities, at a manageable size and capable of docking normally was an idea that has been around for a while.
Putting all pieces together to come up with something that fulfill the goals you impose to is always a challenge but such a premise falls short when speaking about a foiling vessel.
There are plenty of constraints that set clear limits and several aspects to cope with: Foiling Performance, Floating Performance, Stability, and a handful of practical matters to sort out.

Develop, Build & Sail
In collaboration with Sailing Architect Ltd. specialized in (Super) Yacht Marketing and high performance sailing, Wilson & Marquinez found a partner to set the next steps.
Willem Jan Landman (NL) & Pablo Bottacchi (AR), collaborating partners within Sailing Architect believe the demand for foiling cruising and racing yachts is present in current times.
BOOT Düsseldorf 2025 and The Foiling Organization offer our team the opportunity to launch the next steps to develop the first build yacht of the MW40 Offshore Sailor.
The MW40OF Specifications
-
- Double wheel to steer smooth and firm, integrated to the cockpit seats to save space.
- All running rigging is centralized around the back of the cabin as usual on offshore boats with a central pit and winches on the sides.
- Traveler track at the back made sense as its own bridge will conform part of rudders support structure and make for a safe cockpit enclosure.
- Coffee grinder to allow quick trimming of the mainsail when foiling with rig power management crucial for a steady flight.
- An offshore styled type of cabin to cover the crew as much as possible.
-
- Standard two spreader mast.
- Deck poles for Code 0 sails to optimize foiling and floating polars.
- Top mast Runners.
- Quick set-up Inner Stays.
- Quick removal fix bowsprit.
-
- Foil & Keel works together. Configuration maximizes foiling capacity, makes docking easy but also promote transverse stability on flight. Dynamic transverse stability is one of our driving goals. It means how easy the boat will be to keep foiling through changes on wind strength or waves and canted keel helps pushing the boat out earlier compared to a fixed keel boat.
- Foil configuration is natural when thinking on a dock-able boat, with a fully retractable round foil being the way to go. This type of foil maximize its action with heel and has the additional benefit of allowing complete removal on light wind conditions.
- A retractable double rudder set up stands up natural too with leeward rudder matching perfectly sailing with some heel and increasing righting moment.
-
- Yanmar 40HP or
- Electric Engine + Battery pack
Sailing Performance
The MW40OF is designed to perform in races according to the World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations (OSR) Category’s Monohull 1-4.
Within a One-Design Class format like the SailGP we consider to develop a One-Design racing season.
- The boat is capable of foiling while reaching and downwind at 12kt TWS with boatspeeds between 19kt and 30kt across normal wind range.
- Upwind foiling with TWS above 15kt.
- Full use of the foil in winds above 10kts TWS in semi foiling or skimming mode with TWA in the range of 65-75.
“The Foiling World Pavilion in Hall 15 will host Sailing Architect Ltd. to launch the MW40 Offshore Foiler.”
